Jeremy Lessem
Biography

Jeremy Lessem grew up around a courtroom. At a very young age, Jeremy was watching trials and meeting influential judges, prosecutors and defense attorneys while following around his father, highly respected Los Angeles criminal defense attorney Mark D. Lessem.

After he graduated from the top-tier University of Michigan Law School, Jeremy began his career practicing civil litigation. After three years of being a civil litigator, he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and began practicing criminal law in 2004.

Jeremy quickly forged a reputation for being a skilled, dedicated and aggressive criminal defense attorney who had inherited his father’s passion for protecting the rights of the accused.

“I love being able to look into somebody’s eye and let them know that I’m the one who’s fighting for them, and that nobody is going to work harder for them than me,” Jeremy says.

As a co-founding partner of the law firm of Lessem, Newstat & Tooson, LLP, Jeremy brings to bear a wealth of criminal defense experience.

He has represented clients in a variety of misdemeanors and felonies, including numerous serious and violent felonies. His experience includes: DUI and traffic offenses; drug sale, possession and trafficking; weapons charges; medical marijuana; robbery; theft; burglary; assault with a deadly weapon; forgery; sexual offenses; and murder, among others.

He also possesses outstanding trial techniques and solid negotiation skills with prosecutors. For his continued achievements, Jeremy has been selected to the the prestigious list of Southern California Super Lawyers® in 2014, 2015, and 2016. Jeremy has been featured in various news outlets, including the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Rolling Stone Magazine, and Billboard Magazine.

Jeremy has worked on cases involving a variety of different forms of evidence, such as DNA, ballistics and chemical analysis. He knows how to challenge the testimony of police officers and forensic science experts and to identify the strengths and weaknesses in the prosecution’s case.

In many cases, Jeremy has gone to trial and secured acquittals or lesser sentences for clients. In countless other cases, he has obtained plea agreements that served his clients’ best interests.

“I’ve handled complex, serious cases against top prosecutors, where the stakes were the highest,” Jeremy says. “The prosecutors in Los Angeles County know me, and they know that if they don’t make a fair and reasonable plea offer for my clients, then we will go to trial. And if we go to trial, they stand a good chance of losing. I think having that reputation and experience helps my clients.”

Jeremy believes strongly in establishing good communication with his clients. He takes the time to listen to them, understand their objectives and be honest in his assessment of their case.

“I want our clients to know that they will be treated fairly, and that we will represent them with integrity and thoroughness,” Jeremy says. “I don’t make promises about specific results. No ethical criminal defense attorney ever should. But I do feel that no one will work harder fighting for a client. At Lessem, Newstat & Tooson, LLP we will leave no stone unturned.”
