Kenneth Hamilton has dedicated his professional career to criminal defense. He has never been a cop or prosecutor and he has never arrested someone or argued to incarcerate another person. He takes pride in being a bold advocate for the individual against the enormous weight of the State, and his long-standing passion for defense work shines through in his zealous and aggressive approach fighting for the accused. Kenneth is among a small percentage of lawyers in the state to be a Board Certified Criminal Law Specialist by the State Bar of California.
Kenneth began his nearly 15-year career after earning his law degree from Western Sierra Law School. While in law school, he interned with the public defender’s office and private criminal defense lawyers and went on to serve as a public defender for Ventura County and Tulare County.
Kenneth has extensive experience counseling other lawyers and defending clients in a range of criminal matters, including DUI and appeals. His has completed the IACP/NHTSA course on DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing. His insight into procedures used by law enforcement during DUI stops and arrests enables him to effectively challenge all aspects of the government’s case against his clients.
In addition to defending clients charged with crimes, Kenneth is also a seasoned appellate lawyer, and has successfully written appeals throughout his career. He formerly worked in the appellate division of the Ventura County Public Defender’s Office and is the attorney on record in multiple published opinions, including those involving issues related to the Second and Fourth Amendments. He is currently a member of the Appellate Panel for the Los Angeles County Superior Court.
In line with the work Lessem, Newstat & Tooson, LLP has accomplished in matters involving mental health and criminal defense, Attorney Hamilton has a considerable amount of experience pertaining to the intersection of mental health and criminal law. He has defended clients detained at mental health hospitals, has received special training to advocate for clients with mental illness, and has participated on the Ventura County Mental Health Board for over 2 years. In this capacity, he worked with behavioral health organizations to reform programs and policies intended to benefit individuals with mental illness.
Kenneth is a seasoned criminal law specialist who is an asset to our legal team. When not advocating on behalf of clients facing charges, he spends time helping his children with their homework, sailing, shooting, or brewing beer in his garage.
