Los Angeles DUI Arrests Down During Thanksgiving Weekend

Statistically, holidays and the days before and after boast the highest rates of DUI arrests, as well as many DUI accidents, injuries, and fatalities. Among these holidays, Thanksgiving weekend is typically one with many suspected DUIs, as well as preventable injuries and death. While celebrating with family and friends, many drivers get behind the wheel above the legal limit – .08% BAC (blood alcohol content) in Los Angeles. This year, however, law enforcement agencies throughout Los Angeles County are reporting slightly lower numbers for Thanksgiving weekend DUI arrests.

According to preliminary statistics released by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), there were fewer DUI arrests this Thanksgiving holiday compared to the same period last year. Officers across the region and the state had increased patrols and conducted sobriety checkpoints in an effort to crack down on impaired drivers.

Between 6 pm Wednesday and 6 am Saturday, CHP official reported 724 arrests for suspicion of DUI across the state. In Los Angeles County, there were a total of 158 DUI arrests. Last year, CHP made 840 arrests statewide and 186 in Los Angeles County. Traffic deaths caused by motorists driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs were also down throughout the state.

Although the numbers of DUI arrests were down this Thanksgiving weekend, there were still a substantial amount of arrests. Now, these individuals must navigate challenging DMV and criminal proceedings in their fight to avoid serious penalties, including driver's license suspensions, large fines and fees, and possible terms of imprisonment.
