Lessem & Newstat, LLP Defends Clients Accused of Murder

Lessem, Newstat & Tooson, LLP’s recent caseload has involved two clients accused of murder. When faced with these types of cases, we understand the level of care and diligence that is necessary to protect the rights of our clients, especially in complex cases like the following.

Jeremy Lessem recently represented a client with mental health issues who faced life in prison on attempted murder charges. Together with the Deputy District Attorney, he worked nonstop at crafting an appropriate resolution given the nature of the client’s illness. After more than a year of hard work, Mr. Lessem was able to get the attempted murder charge dismissed. Instead of going to prison, the client has been placed on probation and was admitted into a program focused on treating his mental health issues.

According to Mr. Lessem, “this deal is the culmination of hard work and most importantly compassion and understanding in regards to the mental health issues which impact so many in the criminal justice system.”

Attorney J. Tooson has been busy as well with a high-profile murder case involving a high school student, which is currently being tried in the Los Angeles Superior Court. The defendant, then 17-year-old Jordan Emon Joseph, was charged as a juvenile when the crime was committed, but due to the nature of the crime, a judge ruled to try the young man as an adult. Mr. Tooson has spoken out to the Los Angeles Times against this decision.

“Our hearts go out to the Cook family in this process … but the appropriate venue should have been juvenile court, not only because of [Joseph's] age but because of his complete lack of criminal history,” said Mr. Tooson. “We believe when a minor commits a crime, or allegedly commits a crime, juvenile court, with all its programs and amenities available, is the best option for rehabilitation.”

Joseph has plead not guilty to murder charges in the death of an 18-year-old male after he allegedly walked up to the victim’s car and shot him multiple times in the face and neck in a parking lot in Gardena, CA. Mr. Tooson is working diligently to protect his client’s rights during this time. The next hearing to select a trial date took place today, April 11, 2016.
